Thread Listing » AWN Applets
Cairo Menu - added to awn-extras
#16031 by moonbeam (1.0000) posted on 10:40am Wednesday, November 07th, 2007

As was announced here I have been working on a new main menu. It has reached the point where I have merged it into awn-extras so it gets wider testing.
[Q]

It defaults to using standard gtk colours. If you want to express yourself more than look in gconf uncheck honour_gtk and have fun. I will get a configuration dialog for this eventually along with one for awn-notification-daemon. Any volunteers to make one?
[Q]

The menu layout goes from left to right... meaning you need to place it far enough from the right side of your screen to display all the submenus.
[Q]

TODO:
I've completed the original list. Additional suggestions will be entertained.
[Q]

[EDIT]
[Q]

Things to look out for:
[Q]

Please post here if you happen to see a large white window flash briefly when clicking on the the applet icon. Also please indicate if you only see it the first time after starting the applet or (every time/ more often) when you click on the icon.

Yes. that is a deliberate decision. At some point when I have it stabilized I may implement that. Let's just say it does a lot at start to keep things very fast afterwards. A gconf change would require tearing that down and rebuilding it. It can be done... but it's not my highest priority.

Modifications:
[Q]

Added couple simple separators in the top level.
Added spacers on the bottom and top of the toplevel menu.
Fixed up issue of text entry not hiding when a click is made on the menu.
[Q]

Also, I don't know if I've noted this in the past but a mouse scrollwheel will allow you to scroll through all the menus except for the toplevel menu... very useful when there are more items in the menu than can be displayed.
[Q]

And as always a reminder that it can be configured through gconf-editor. A configuration dialog will be made eventually.
-of particular note is the honour_gtk key. You probably want to uncheck that if you want to customize the appearance.
-also if you enable fade_in it will fade the menu in when you open it. It's not enabled by default as it will conflict with CF's window fadeins... I've been told that it produces a slow process :-)

Right click on the applet icon to get a preferences dialog.

It doesn't yet allow editing of all the options and it is unfinished. But what is there is mostly functional.
[Q]

A warning it is a bit non-standard in how it works. To apply any changes it cairo-menu will cause awn to restart it. One of the consequences of this approach is that it's a wise idea to close awn-manager when you do this (it will prompt you to do so).

deepbluepixel said:

[Q]

I'll look into it. I believe compiz fusion does the "shadows" as part of drawing the toplevel window frame. Since the menus do not have a visible window frame (and it they're toplevel windows anyway :-) ) that's a bit problematic.
[Q]

So... it's kind of non-trivial. If I get the version of cairo-menu working acceptable that uses a top level window per submenu I can probably get CF to do the shadows. I will be having another look at that implementation at some point. The problem with that is it is really sluggish compared to the way I'm implementing things now... menus are slow to appear. I think it's intrinsic in the overhead involved with handling top level windows.
[Q]

The other possibility is that put an option into cairo-men to provide it's own shadow. I suspect that is relatively doable but it would need to be configured separately from CF.
[Q]

Anyway, I'll look into it.
[Q]

If you want to file a feature request in https://bugs.launchpad.net/awn-extras/

Then it will reduce the likelihood that this will slip my mind.

New feature:
[Q]

Menu size now adjusts to only be as large as is necessary to accommodate the largest entry in the menu. This will not exceed max chars * fontsize pixels so I'd suggest changing Max Chars (in the preferences... textlen in gconf) to something like 30.
[Q]

Upshot is that you should no longer have menus with _all_ the entries having large blank areas on the right side.
[Q]

Please note that the max chars values has always been a approximation of a worst case situation. In other words if it is set to 20 and you have a lot of Ws and Ms in the menu entry it would display around that many characters. In general, at this point, you want to set it to a high number unless you know you want it otherwise.

Menu size now adjusts to only be as large as is necessary to accommodate the largest entry in the menu. This will not exceed max chars * fontsize pixels so I'd suggest changing Max Chars (in the preferences... textlen in gconf) to something like 30.

Just a little report that everything works.
[Q]

A little tricky to find good menu colors with GTK unchecked.
[Q]

I must also write that AWN overall is really stable now and thats
great :-)

Newest addition:
[Q]

Cairo Menu places now has monitoring of removable devices.
[Q]

If a removable device is connected it should show up in places. Example a cd drive should always be there, a usb driver should be there when it is plugged into the system.
[Q]

If a removable drive is connected but not mounted then clicking on it will (attempt to) mount the drive.
[Q]

If a removable drive is mounted then clicking on it will open it.
[Q]

To do:
[Q]

Right click unmount and eject.
Visually distinguish drives that are only connected from those that are mounted also.
[Q]

Please test - I believe the code is now relatively robust... but when dealing with this sort of crap it needs to be tested :-)

Newest features added:
-applet icon should properly size itself... might not always work on bar resize but it should be good after a restart.
-there is now a logout option available. It defaults to off and you may need to go into gconf-editor if you want to change the program used to perform the task. The visibility of the option can be toggled through the applet preferences dialog.
-option to disable tooltips.
-some horizontal separators have been added in places to define sections and tops of menus.

This is great, I've been hoping for a menu that doesn't require clicking to open sub menus.
[Q]

Moonbeam, thank you, is there any chance that in the future "Places" can be expanded in the same way as the applications menus so that I can go right to a document or sub folder in the documents folder.
[Q]

I'm asking for a lot, but I'm hoping for something like, when getting to the bottom of a folder hierarchy, that a mouse scroll wheel can move up an down through the files in that folder viewed by list or list with icons like in stacks.

two clicks to any file

Good work, only thing i'm not a fan of is the overlap of the submenus

Hmmm... I guess there is always a chance :-)
[Q]

My initial reaction is that it's a little bit out of the scope of what is should manage. In the gnome version (which is the only one in tree at the moment) I might entertain if if I can structure it so I do not need to add any additional libraries. Basically, I'll think about it and if I can implement it in a lightweight manner then I will.

How would you prefer them to behave? I'm quite open to suggestions on that.

kinda just looking for a direct replacement of the gnome menu through awn and yours is by far the closest. gnome's submenus expand adjacent to the main menu without covering any text. Can understand if you're trying something different, just become accustomed to that look.
[Q]

convincing the window manager to draw drop shadows would be a plus too.

ok :-) Give it some time... if it doesn't grow on you post again. It actually isn't a big deal to make that configurable. I'm just trying to keep the configuration options limited to things people will end up using.

It would also be quite the trick :-) The lack of drop shadows by the window manager is the price that's paid for it being so fast. But some day when I'm in the right frame of mind I'll try to put in some code to allow the menus to duplicate the effect.

one more thing...Gnome menu has a short pause before opening the submenu to prevent opening every menu on your way to the last entry. So short that its barely noticeable, but prevents the erratic opening of submenus in your menu.
[Q]

looks like this also helps with the problem of keeping the cursor parallel when moving to the submenu. gives you vertical leeway in getting to the submenu without it changing. but again the pause in closing previous and opening new submenu is so short it doesn't effect actual vertical movement. just allows those small diagonal movements to occur.
[Q]

Note: your overlapped design helps to minimize the vertical error ;)
[Q]

sounds complicated when written out, but assume its not as hard in practice.

[Q]

Probably not overly complicated. Is the delay seen with the gnome menus just caused from overhead of drawing a new toplevel window I wonder...
[Q]

I'll look into it. At this point I'm still mulling over implementing using a toplevel window per menu. Which will end up giving that effect as a byproduct of the overhead involved.
[Q]

Anyway, I'm mulling a few things over right now. Some of the annoying characteristics inherent in the current design are bothering me... But I really like the responsiveness.
[Q]

Upshot, I probably won't implement this feature until I decide if I want to change how the menus are displayed. It might be an idea to put a feature request on https://bugs.launchpad.net/awn-extras/ so I don't forget about it :-)
