Applet: File Browser Launcher
#18717 by sharkbait (0.9176) posted on 2:08pm Saturday, December 29th, 2007
I sometimes found it somewhat awkward when opening the file browser in Ubuntu, so I decided to make an applet to fix that.
By default, the applet shows a dialog with your home path and an "open" button. Click the button or hit enter and nautilus will open that directory. Also by default, middle-clicking the applet will open your home folder without displaying the dialog.
Right-click it and select Preferences to change the icon, the file browser, and what to do when left-clicked and middle-clicked, including changing what directory to display or open. The preferences menu also checks to see if you have Thunar, Konqueror, and/or Dolphin installed, and includes them as options.

It's written in Python and any suggestions, bugs, etc. are welcome.

I've pushed a copy into my branch.

I would suggest that the default filebrowser should be xdg-open if it is present on the system. Which it probably will be as it is already required for several applets in awn-extras.

OK, added. I also added a feature called "places" which lists links to the home folder, mounted local and network drives, and bookmarks. There are options for places in the preferences menu. Also, if you were having any GConf problems, they're gone now.

The download location is still the same (here).

New version of file browser launcher:
Conforms to the Awn Applet Guidelines (at least more than before)
It allows you to use Ubuntu's folder icon, your current theme's icon, or, a custom icon.
If the current icon theme does not support a specific icon (such as a hard drive), then the default folder icon is used.
xdg-open is now really the default file browser and is labeled correctly.
The download location is now here: http://ultimate-theme-manager.googlecode.com/files/file-browser-launcher.tgz

Any comments, suggestions, etc. are still appreciated.

moonbeam: Thanks for your inclusion of my applet in your branch. I didn't expect anyone to do that.

My pleasure. I'll update the copy in my branch and update testing once our build issues settle down a bit. Or tomorrow... whichever comes first :-)

Hi, I'm trying to install this version of file-browser-launcher over a previous one that did not display the icon correctly. How would I do this from the download link you posted? I tried copying the files over the old versions in /usr/share/avant-window-navigator/applets/file-browser-launcher and replacing the desktop configuration file with the new one. However, the applet doesn't load when I add it to awn, it just displays a white line and I get the following error

If you're using the trunk version (such as from the PPA), just drag and drop the icon you want onto the applet.
[Q]

If you still want to use the old version, copy the .py file to /usr/share/avant-window-navigator/applets/file-browser-launcher/
Just know that there are many bugs that are fixed in trunk but are still in the version linked here, which hasn't been updated in months.

Thanks a lot, I didn't realise you could set the icon in this way.
