Digital clock applet inhibits suspend

Noticed my machine wasn't suspending when idle, and have tracked it down to the digital clock applet. Swapped it out for the Cairo clock, and now the machine suspends happily.

I have no idea why it would inhibit suspend. Could someone point me to some docs on this?
