Sticky Notes v 10.02.20
[Q]

It is available for download here:

or
[Q]

Sticky Notes v 10.02.20
(Awn applet package)
[Q]

You can install this applet through Awn Manager, but I have found you may have to close and re-start Awn Manager, after installing, for the applet to appear in the list.
[Q]

or for those without Awn, or just as an alternative, a version that runs in your system tray:
[Q]

UPDATE from 10.02.15
- Context menus updated
- 'Sticky by default' option added
- 'Cycle' option where each new note created increments the default colour
- 'Lock' option prevents moving, re-sizing, changing colour, changing font and editing text of the note.
- Middle clicking a note's control bar toggles 'Lock'
- Notes now accept drag'n'drop (in addition to applet icon)
[Q]

Please report any bugs or issues here, and advise your desktop environment and window manager to assist in sorting out the issue (along with any terminal output).
[Q]

Here is some screen shots of it in action.
[Q]

Cheers.

Lachlan, thank you for doing this and doing it so quickly.
[Q]

I have only had time to have a quick play with this so far but it seems to work very well and do everything I was looking for.
[Q]

My only query is about the middle click action. The help suggested that this would show the desktop allowing the user to see the sticky notes that would otherwise always be under all other windows. For me middle clicking hid everything including the sticky notes.
[Q]

This is a very minor issue and is the only quirk I have experienced so far.
[Q]

I already like this better than xpad so I shall certainly continue using it. If any proper bugs surface I shall let you know.
[Q]

Thanks for a very useful applet.

Can you tell me what window manager/desktop combination you are using? This may shed some light on the show desktop option.

I have a fairly standard Ubuntu installation on this machine so I am using Gnome desktop and Compiz as my window manager (with the default window decorator compiz-decorator).
[Q]

I have tried 10.02.04 and it still does the same thing (I don't know if this issue was something you had tried to fix).

I have fixed the 'show desktop' issue with compiz. I just have to get 'workspaces' working correctly with compiz now. Still need to test on metacity.
[Q]

The checking for changes in workspaces is now added as well.
[Q]

Will upload a new version with these fixes soon.

I am having real problems with this version.
[Q]

Firstly I lost my notes and preferences when I upgrade (not a big deal as I am still testing and didn't lose anything of any importance). Secondly, it has crashed several times. A couple of times I got the frowning face and a couple of times it just froze with all the notes greyed out.
[Q]

The show desktop feature worked though ;-).
[Q]

[Edit]
[Q]

On further testing it appears (although being wrong is always an option) that the crashes are related to the show count feature. With the previous versions I turned this off straightaway as I don't really like it so I didn't notice any problems but it is possible that the earlier versions may have crashed under the same circs. However, because I lost my prefs when I installed the later version show count was on by default.
[Q]

I have turned it on and off a couple of times and both times it was on I successfully provoked a crash but neither of the times show count was off.
[Q]

If there is any specific testing you would like me to do, let me know.
[Q]

Thanks for your time Lachlan.

Hi lotus,
[Q]

I have uploaded version 10.02.06 which is now fully working in the environments listed in the first post.
[Q]

Try this version, and it may get rid of the crash you have experienced. There has been a lot of code re-done in this version to get Compiz viewports working.
[Q]

Again, (sorry, hopefully the last time) you will need to uninstall the last version as the notes are not compatible due to the new viewport code.
[Q]

Please, if you experience any of your previous issues, can you post some terminal output so I can locate where the problem is?
[Q]

Thanks, and enjoy :)

The problem persists but it is not related to the show count feature as I initially thought.
[Q]

Ever time I try to resize a note, the cursor flickers between the normal arrow cursor and the resize cursor (when over a note) and sticky notes hangs and greys out.
[Q]

I didn't uninstall the previous version (the last time I tried I could uninstall from the applet list but strangely not from the dock where the sad face icon appeared in place the the sticky notes icon) and I didn't lose my notes.
[Q]

Let me know how to get some terminal output and I shall post something.
[Q]

The notes do now stay on the correct desktop though.

Hi lotus,
[Q]

There is no terminal output in this case, but I have found the culprit.
[Q]

It is actually the displaying of the 'control bar' at the bottom of the notes.
[Q]

It appears sometimes compiz is generating an enter-notify and leave-notify signal at the same time, thus throwing my code into an endless signal handling loop.
[Q]

Working on a solution....

I would think with the 'rapid' updates I have posted here, the .xml file storing your notes might not be compatible with the newer version of the applet (there were some element changes to accommodate viewports with compiz).
[Q]

I recommend uninstalling the applet completely before installing the new version (BTW, I have just uploaded a bugfix version), and also delete the following file (which will delete your notes!):

I have tested 10.02.7 and it no longer crashes when resizing and the notes stay on the correct screen.
[Q]

There was one change that I was not expecting and indeed don't care about but probably should mention. The bar at the bottom no longer appears when the cursor enters the note.
[Q]

Aesthetically I think this is a big improvement - I didn't like the look of the grey bar. The only drawback is that a new user may not understand how to move/resize or where to right click to delete the note, change colour etc.
[Q]

I don't think I care about this as I know that there is an invisible bar there, but it's a little user unfriendly as a new user would have to consult the help to be able to work out what to do. The wording of the help ("While not immediately obvious...") suggests you are already aware of this.
[Q]

Perhaps notes could be drawn with a slightly darker bar along the bottom that is there all the time so as to alert the user to the existence of the control bar.
[Q]

Apart from this quirk, I haven't found any problems with this version.
[Q]

I am very grateful to you for the effort you have put into this and it now appears to be working well for me.

Hi lotus,
[Q]

Thanks for the feedback. Whilst definitely a valid point, the bar being the same colour as the note is for aesthetic reasons. This is actually the way I wanted the notes to appear in the first place (I didn't like the original bar either).
[Q]

As you also mention, I have included this in the help dialog, so I do not think it is going to be an issue overall. That said, I will definitely have a think about ways this can be improved (the most obvious I can think of right now is by adding a tooltip on mouseover of the bar).
[Q]

I have also submitted a request for this applet to be included in awn-extras, so no doubt, I will have additional feedback from the awn devs.

Thanks, and enjoy :)

Having played around more with this, I have noticed something that probably isn't a bug but is nevertheless a little frustrating.
[Q]

There appear to be constraints on the size of notes, both minimum and maximum. I am unlikely to want notes smaller than the minimum size permitted (although perhaps others would) but I have already twice wanted notes wider than the maximum permitted.
[Q]

Is there any reason to constrain the size of notes at all?

Hi lotus,
[Q]

The main reason the maximum window size is constrained is for aesthetics. They are, after all, sticky notes, and should look as such. The text area inside each note does scroll for larger notes.
[Q]

However, with part of the process to have the applet included with awn-extras, I have uploaded version 10.02.10, and this does include a larger maximum note size (not much, but a little larger).
[Q]

Please see the first post for other changes to the applet.

Thanks Lachlan.
[Q]

I have one bug (or at least strange and unexplained behaviour) and one feature request (actually, it's to reinstate a feature).
[Q]

When an application other than sticky notes has the focus and I left click on the sticky notes dock icon, my screen flips round to the third of my four desktops (unless I am on desktop three already). I have at least one note on each desktop for testing purposes but the last note created was on desktop four so I have no idea why it always goes to three no matter which desktop I start on. Left clicking used to bring to front/send to back which I liked but this behaviour isn't very useful. This used to work so it appears to be a regression.
[Q]

My feature request is to make the display of the number of notes (and the little triangles) a selectable preference. I don't like the number on the icon and it isn't useful (to me anyway) so I would like to turn it off. I also don't think of the notes as being separate windows like I would with say Firefox so I don't want the triangle indicators either, it just looks a bit messy.
[Q]

I do like the new look of the control bar. The recessed line and resize triangle hit the spot in my view.
[Q]

I have just thought of one other feature I would like, although it may not be trivial to implement. That is the ability to select formats/fonts etc, such as numbered and bulleted lists, bold, italic, underline etc. This is definitely in the "nice to have" category rather than being really important, but it would be nice to have.
[Q]

Thanks again Lachlan. This is now one of my favourite applets.

Font choice is definitely a possibility and 'might' get included in a future update, but formats, bullet lists etc is a bit of overkill for such a simple applet.
[Q]

Version 10.02.14 is linked above. Due to 'Show Count' being re-instated, you will need to delete '~/.config/awn/applets/stickynotes/stickynotes.xml' for the update to work.

Clicking on the stickynotes dock icon does correctly bring to front/send to back without changing desktop.

I appreciate that the formatting options may be over the top. The main one I would like is bulleted lists which I can probably do just by learning the keyboard shortcut for a blob.
