[Announcement] Awn and Awn Extras 0.2.8 is coming soon! (NEED TESTERS)

I've been given the OK by Neil (well, several weeks ago) to release a bugfix-only, stable release for Awn and Awn Extras, since we don't have any sort of timeframe for 0.4.
[Q]

I'm going to create some -stable-testing packages in my PPA sometime soon, which will correspond to the 0.2.7 branches in the respective projects. I encourage users to help out by installing these builds and reporting any bugs in the respective bug trackers.
[Q]

Note: this post is a work in progress and will be updated somewhat regularly.

May or may not be fixed by 0.2.8

* Awn built with --with-desktop=agnostic or --with-desktop=xfce4 has launchers that only launch sometimes (gives a "Bad address" error in the terminal. Bug)

Overall we seem to be doing well, at least on the milestones page. Only 3 non-copyright issues. Anyway I was just wondering if there was any sort of timeline on this.
[Q]

I would LOVE to see this in Intrepid (granted, it has 0.2.6 which is great), but as I recall supporting 0.2.1 has been rather annoying as almost all complaints are already fixed, and we have a lot of Ubuntu users.

I'm (slowly) working on the trash applet. I've decided to rewrite the stupid thing, because I think it's broken from an architectural standpoint (it uses a subclass of GtkDrawingArea to render the icon, and most of the rest is a direct port of the pre-GIO trash applet from gnome-panel). I'm writing the new applet in Vala, and the VFS backend implementations will be in their own files so the barrier to fix bugs should be a bit lower.

since --with-desktop=xfce4 and agnostic are in trunk now, i (and presumably many others) would seriously appreciate non-gnome-dependent versions of the plugins in awn-extras. the non-gnome core version is getting better each time, but is also pretty boring without the extras (which still want to pull in a lot of gnome dependencies).

Not going to happen in 0.2.8 - the changes are too invasive. Check out the --without-gnome and --without-gconf flags for awn-extras for what you want. I'm slowly converting some of the applets to be more desktop-agnostic for 0.4.0 and beyond, but I'm pretty much the only current dev who is interested in that. Any help would be appreciated.

Added the branches to the top post. If I have time this weekend, I'll try to create some packages.

A rough count in src/Makefile.am seems to show close to 2/3 of the applets already fall into the agnostic category. This is for trunk. Not sure how that translates into 0.2.8

FYI, 65% of the applets in 0.2.8 are GNOME and/or GConf dependent. This number will only change slightly, due to Garbage replacing the Trash applet.

Thanks for the heads-up malept. I have no experience in C/Python programming myself, but let me know if you need any help with testing agnostic packages.

Status update:
[Q]

This week I'm going to do three things:
[Q]

1. backport moonbeam's fixes for the "bad address" bug (everyone who hit this bug needs to test the fix, and if it works, thank moonbeam :) )
[Q]

2. Finish off Garbage. At least, I hope to finish off Garbage this week. I need to work on drag-and-drop support.
[Q]

3. Provide packages in my PPA (to lessen confusion as to which packages to install) for people to test. They will be named the same as the packages in the Awn Testing PPA, except that they won't have -trunk at the end of the name, and obviously the version will be different.
[Q]

I should probably note that this plan all depends on my job not giving me a ridiculous amount of work this week.

Stable Awn packages are now in my PPA, ready for testing. I haven't done Awn Extras yet (quite a bit more complex, and I'll probably need some help with it).

IMO it wouldn't hurt that much if you took latest revision of awn-extras, once applets land in awn-extras they're pretty much usable and stable and are receiving mostly fixes, there not much breaking done afterwards... Well except recent AWNLib issues.

The thing is that would basically necessitate using the latest revision of core due to the additions to libawn that various applets are making uses of. In which case I'm guess it would no longer be a "bugfix-only, stable release".
[Q]

That being said, I think at some point we should give consideration to a 0.3.0 release depending on how quickly the 0.4 rewrite progresses (but that's a bit offtopic for the thread and probably should wait for 0.2.8 to be out the door).

There were some additions to libawn? I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware of that.

[Q]

Yeah quite a few.
[Q]

There were all the cairo-effects stuff which added some additional API for those applets that wanted to deal directly with cairo surfaces.
[Q]

Also AwnIcons.
[Q]

Significant changes in AppletSimple including several additions.
[Q]

Various parts of the standardized menu.
[Q]

Trimming of xutils.*
[Q]

Those are the things that I've worked on that come to mind as being post 0.2.6. I'm sure there are various other items that I'm missing either because I'm absent minded or I had little or no involvement :-)

I see... I'm forgetting that the last release was almost 7 months ago.
[Q]

I guess it's a good thing that Ibex will have stable AWN(at least lets hope). But will it also be supported for the next 7 months (on IRC/LP)?

We still support 0.2.6 and I expect we'll support 0.2.8 at least as long (even if there is a 0.3.2 release). I don't think we really have much of a choice in the matter.

I've finally successfully built packages for Awn Extras 0.2.7. They are available, along with my Awn 0.2.7 packages, in my PPA (linked in the first post).

Backported a patch from mhr3 (thanks!) that fixes custom icon effects support. It's in the PPA as well.

Your favourite justification seemed to be at the web the simplest thing to remember of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed even as other people think about worries that they just don't recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top neatly as outlined out the entire thing without having side effect , folks can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
