Well, it's not really about the kernel. It's about making sure that your upgrade is not stuck somewhere in between. There're some packages which are upgraded only after others have been upgraded. Sometimes, this means that a couple of upgrades and dist-upgrades are in place before really everything is up to date and fully functional. The kernel is only one of many packages.

But I'm sure you knew that. You probably also know that you need the development headers of the referenced packages, which is why I'm not even suggesting you check whether you have libglade2-dev, libgnome2-dev and libgnome-desktop-dev installed.

Ok it was solved by installing the metapackage libgnome-desktop-dev ;)
