Dock won't show up

Hey,
I recently installed AWN from the yast repo on software.opensuse.org.
I installed a leopard OSX theme in the AWN manager, but the actual dock itself is not running. I have Compiz Fusion running and try to open the dock but still nothing. Should I test it in the terminal(how exactly?)? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

whenever I try to run avant-window-navigator i get:
Sull-03-157:~ # avant-window-navigator &
[1] 7124
Sull-03-157:~ # Error: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (-fusion) or another compositing manager.

I installed compiz and all of the packs for it.
Search for Compiz Fusion All
[Q]
When I try to run it I get:
# compiz
compiz: Trying '/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1'
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension

Also: it looks like you're running Awn and Compiz as root (based on the fact that your prompt ends with a #). It's not a good idea to run GUI stuff as root.

I tried to reload my ATI drivers but to no avail. It can't detect them. I am using an ATI mobility fireGL card in a thinkpad t60p. I get the same errors with Compiz. What should I try next? Thank you again for all the help.

Which ATI drivers are you using? fglrx or the Xorg ones?
