Mail applet error in pclos

I installed AWN in pclos (from repos) and it works fine with one unfortunate exception -- the mail applet shows up in the dock as a white line only.
When AWN is launched from a terminal and I try to activate the mail applet from preferences, I get this message:

It probably means your version of libgmail is older than the version pavpanchekha wrote the Gmail applet against. You should probably prod the PCLinuxOS folks to put a newer version of Awn/Awn Extras in their repositories, as I'm pretty sure pavpanchekha rewrote the Gmail applet into the Mail Applet (2.0) in time for 0.24/0.2.6, which does not depend on libgmail.

Wow, that was quick (for which, thanks!)
Actually the applet available from the pclos repo is called Gmail applet rather than mail applet -- from which I interpret what you wrote to mean it's actually quite old.
I googled around to see if I could download a more up-to-date version but couldn't find one.
Any help here?

Well, there were three separate, but related thoughts in my reply:

1. the version of libgmail (which is a dependency of the Gmail applet in Awn Extras 0.2.1) is probably too old, which is why it can't find the lgconstants module.

2. the Gmail applet was rewritten by pavpanchekha between versions 0.2.1 and 0.2.4, and the rewrite was renamed to "Mail Applet". The first release of it was released in Awn Extras 0.2.4. It's not really a good idea to use the Mail applet outside of Awn Extras because it depends very heavily on pavpanchekha's other project, AWNLib, and since that changes rather often, having a mismatched Mail applet and AWNLib will most likely lead to a non-working applet.

3. Since the Awn/Awn Extras install was from a repository, I suggested that you ask the PCLinuxOS packagers to upgrade to our most stable version, 0.2.6.
