Applet Suggestions
#1970 by djgm1 (0.2624) posted on 4:18am Sunday, June 17th, 2007
I have tons of ideas so I thought it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling as I am sure lots of other people have some killer ideas as well. Here's my shortlist:
[Q]

Mounted Disk List - Click an icon and a menu will appear above the icon with all the mounted devices listed
[Q]

Deskbar Applet - This is my killer app, I love deskbar and it would be great to have it on AWN, maybe affinity can be extended to provide the same functionality
[Q]

Dedicated Downloads Folder - Much like the one seen in the new Mac OS X bar
[Q]

Pidgin/Gaim Applet - Pidgin's backend purple can be used to create your own Pidgin client, would be nice to have a fancy client
[Q]

Evolution Contacts List - this could possibly be integrated with the pidgin applet, but it would be cool if i could access all my contacts and send e-mails
[Q]

I have lots of other ideas, but these are at the top. I suggest other people post here as well so we can keep a list for developers who are interested in developing a plugin. Ideas?

heh, the new applet system will be really nice. I'll make one for Exaile once python bindings are available, and I'll probably make one for Celerius once it gets to 0.1.

The applet I would love to see is a libnotify applet. I mean the notifications you get when your battery runs low or when the music player you're listening to switches to another song.. I guess it won't be that difficult to write an applet with these specifications: http://www.galago-project.org/specs/notification/0.9/index.html

Libnotify isn't embeddable I think, but I wouldn't think it'd be too hard to attach notifications to icons/applets.

Well, then it could replace the notification-daemon. I think it would be a VERY bad idea to write a new notification system, because that would require all applications to make use of this system. Sticking to the specifications by freedesktop.org should in my opinion open up the AWN notifications to all applications that use libnotify or notification-daemon at this moment.

Ah, sorry, I just got what you meant.. No, I think it's not embeddable, but sticking to the specifications should make it possible to 'listen' to notification-requests and catch them!

Hey, about applet suggestions, one applet I think would be really useful would be a folder applet. Like, you know, it'd sit at the bottom of the screen, you could drag and drop files into, click on it to open the home folder... This shouldn't be too hard, it'd be a pretty easy change to the trash applet (I think) but I just have no idea how to make those changes.

One thing about notifications...have a setting to turn them off cause I hate getting them. I understand if the icon is bouncing up and down it wants me, but to rob my full attention when a buddy signs on or I get an email? Just annoying..

Can I be cheeky and add one of my own?

I'd love to have a 'drop-box', which I can 'drop' links, pictures, notes etc, and it would keep them for me until I needed them again. When I clicked it, it would show everything in its own bubble, neatly laid out across the screen, then I could pick something, and the rest would disappear away.
[Q]

Screw it, I'll code this one when I get time :-).

I like this too. Perhaps also allow 'buckets' or something for grouping related items.

I'd really like to see: gnome menu, volume, drawers, and individual launchers (as opposed to a launcher bar).
