[Work in progress] Mac stacks for AWN
#5390 by AndrewGene (0.5968) posted on 2:41pm Wednesday, August 01st, 2007
The stack does not bounce up and down like every other application. It also doesn't show the full name of files in the stack if they are too long--maybe a balloon like the programs have when you hover the mouse over them in the rest of awn. Also the files in the stack don't take the order of the files in the folder. I know you're working hard on this. Just letting you know a couple of things.
[Q]

I really LOVE this little applet!!! It is very much appreciated.

i'm not sure you understood the problem... (look at the stack icon in the screenshot in my last post...it looks like the icons in the stack are piled on that single icon in the awn)....
thats supposed to be a feature, isnt it?
[Q]

no....i'm talking about the stack icon...the thing shown in this screenshot here http://delfick.storage.googlepages.com/thestackicon.png

You have to set "stack_composite_icon" to False in gconf-editor. Works only with the latest patch (bzr11).

Here's what seems to be the problem - the patching failed because it was already patched with the menu patch. After I did an install without the patching worked. Tried a fresh install first comitting the menu patch and then the stack patch and it failed (if I try the -p1 option I get asked what file to patch - is there something to enter here to get it to work?) to patch.
[Q]

I was a bit confused by reading that the menu patch had been applued to the latest bzr because it turns out it hasnøt for me at least.

I did use the "development" way of prefix-ing (like the rest of AWN). It stores stuff in /usr/local/. When you create a package, things will be installed in /usr/, so I think the packager (you) should make the changes.
[Q]

That is incorrect. The correct way is to have autotools automatically use PREFIX to set the paths correctly, that way the build will work without patching. AWN defaults PREFIX to /usr/local, but has no trouble building in /usr, take a look at the other applets and follow their lead for complying with this. Having to patch a patch is just ridiculous.

Now that I have it working, a few notes:
[Q]

- It doesn't handle big directories very well (offscreen, slow, no scrolling, doesn't use all available horiz space)
- It appears to take a fair bit of CPU when moving the mouse around over the applet
- The pile of icons in AWN can be hard to recognize, perhaps putting and emblem or something over them would help.
[Q]

Aside from these few things, it works very well, great work! Debs with this patch are now in the repo.

Ofcourse I am still working on it. The big directories are still an issue. I do not yet have a solution for it, but I don't think I'll have to. I am not implementing a new filemanagers. This applet should not keep track of your entire harddrive. Just a bunch of useful files, like the last few downloaded ones.
[Q]

Also I am implementing some animations, which resulted in rough changes in the structure of the applets. Maybe this reduces the CPU load, although a bit of eyecandy doesn't come for free.

Suggestion: Could you make it so that .desktop get a special treatment?
Namely, I'd like them to:
1) show the application's icon, instead of the generic .desktop file icon.
2) show the application's name, instead of bla.desktop.
3) start the application when clicked, instead of opening the .desktop file in a text editor.
This way, the stack applet can be used as a container of launcher files, similar to Gnome's drawers of Xfce's launcher lists.

here's a little feature request... i like it how the icon shows a preview of the files present in the stack, but currently you only really see the first icon and the rest are hidden behind it. How about making each file icon rotate a little, kinda like holding a deck of cards in your hand?

Well, the thing is is that my Downloads folder doesn't fit, that's why I was complaining. I download a LOT, mayb a way to tell it to only show the latest 20 or so files would be a good idea. I was thinking something this. You only show 20 icons and after that it displays this little thing up top that lets you know there is more items to display. If you click it then it would open the file manager. Or if you don't want to open the file manager on the applet window you could then scroll through the items with the scroll wheel on the mouse.
I think that this would also help with the speed issue that I am having.

Somehow, after dragging an icon, the stack doesn't get focus back, even when showing the popup again. And it uses a focus-out-event to hide.

Great, great patch! I use it to gather files from different places that have to be burned on a CD (over a period of time).

I also have two tips, to further enhance this great applet:
1. Implement key shorcuts like CTRL-A to be able to copy all the files from the applet fast.
2. This could be a tricky, but if possible, it would be nice if we could drop files from Samba location to the applet. Currently nothing happens if you do so.

hmm, I could not find the patch code mirror site at launchpad... May be it's all my fault.

Very useful applet. Thanks for your hard work on this!
[Q]

Like 'photon', in some future version, I'd like to see the ability to clear the symlinks through a GUI, or context menu (i.e. right-click on applet and say 'clear all', or preferably right click on link icon in applet and delete individual file links).
[Q]

Is this feasible?

That happened to me once. It was fixed by changing the backend folder then switching back. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem though...

How about just moving it to the trashbin?searayman said:

In the upcoming (big) patch this is resolved. Though I think you have to wait for a new patch until after the weekend. It will be more like a real filemanager.

@Timon
Why don't you ask Neil for a branch bzr on Launchpad ? Maybe it could be easier for you to develop than using big patchs.

After some more work, I'll probably be shipped as an applet with Awn.

hey, has anyone thought about having a stack for recent files? There is a recent files list on the gnome-main-menu applet so could this be integrated into stacks? This would be a very useful feature for me.

I'm not sure how exactly to do it, but I do know that the information is stored in ~/.recently-used

Could you parse the .recently-used file, grab the file paths and place symlinks to them in whatever folder stacks is set to?
[Q]

Could have a flag in gconf that says "watch recently-used"

My stacks have an issue with reflection... they don't really reflect that well.
[Q]

(There's only one stack in this image to the left of the trashbin)
[Q]

I've tried readjusting the sizes of the stack icons, but if it's too big, then it takes up the whole bar -- if it's too small, there's no reflection.
[Q]

It's minor, but it's bother me. :-P

Definite +1 for this!
[Q]

Also, I think it would be nice if the "Show in File Manager" wasn't an icon but instead clickable white text in the top right, like the "Show All" idea above.
[Q]

And ALSO, what about an option to not show hidden files? I have mine set to my home folder so all the extra files are distracting.
[Q]

Anyway, GREAT work Timon!!! I am amazed how fast and well you have put this together. It is really a great applet. I do a fair amount of programming so if you want any help on a feature or two I would be glad to try and chip in to your great project!

I am off for the weekend, but during the travel I have sketched the ideas for the "new" stacks. It will be a little bit different, but even better (in my opinion). These thought are put together of stuff you all guys have submitted as suggestions.
[Q]

So there will be no "real" bugfixing, but merely a redesign of the structure of the applet. I will be working on it upcoming week, so be patient. After the weekend I will post a more detailed message about this.

got this working ad its great, I use it to quickly get to my epiphany downloads folder, great work! I guess it would be good to reuse nautilus setings such as whether to display hidden files.
[Q]

It would also be awesome to have a nautilus right click option to add a folder as a stack
